Splendid productions - Everyman workshop

Splendid Productions – Notes
·     1 idea is not enough – 1 angle is not enough
·     Getting a group of young people to consider the world
·     I-phones, I pads – it’s all about I.  What would you do for others?
·     Action from ideas – theatre that provokes thought.  The play was all about the tiny things that we can do.
·     Splendid tactics – make it relevant – we like thinking about ourselves, shocking i.e. Jimmy Saville, wrap it in cheese, fun, schpatz (song, humour, emotion)
·     Every commedia character has 2 sides i.e. Capitano – hero – coward, Arlechino – brilliant – idiot
·     EPISODIC
·     6 universal facial expressions – sad, happy, shock, anger, disgust, fear
·     Opposing tension – strings pulling in opposite directions.
·     Everybody gains from something – Jimmy Saville – media etc
·     Playing it straight – truth is at the root of all
·     Character is rhythm
·     How close to the audience do you want to be
·     Put across as many points of view as possible
·     NOT / BUT i.e. Not just the successful, but also the greedy, not just the humble but also the arrogant etc
·     Exercise – flicking the V’s behind someone’s back, look innocent when they turn around, if you’re caught – DIE
·     Find the joy in your work – find the game (do read John Wright’s “Why is that So Funny?”)
·     What are you doing?  Why are you doing it?  What do you think about it? (audience)
·     Clarity
·     “The more I know, the less I know.  That much I know!”
·     On the signs – when you know what’s going to happen you watch how and why it happens
·     Moments – putting a bit of air around it – creation of juxtaposition
·     Commedia – all about sharing
·     Complicite – between actors and then the audience – TRIANGLE
·     Exercise – make a physical shape – other person puts you back to neutral – you say thank you with their name
·     Make a physical shape, other person copies the shape and justifies it – puts you back to neutral – you say thank you and their name
·     Finding your clown – learning to be yourself – not caring if you get it right or wrong – freedom
·     Exercise – wider stance than neutral, bent knees, face as a mask with one huge eye – clock an object, turn head – turn body – move towards it.  Now share it with other people on the other side of the room
